It was a busy semester at MASCLab. We hosted lively discussions in our weekly meetings on topics like the ethics of online research, representation, and thinking through accessibility in our approaches to scholarship as a lab. We shared, critiqued and celebrated each others’ media work. We helped bring events to the broader Teachers College community like Professor Hannah Smithson’s talk on The Challenges of YPAR in Youth Justice Systems. We even co-hosted two happy lunches with our friends at the Visual Research Center at which our members shared multimodal research.
And we kept making and learning together: our media literacy game team for LAMBOOZLED! continued playtesting, researching and iteratively designing as they keep learning from and inciting “fake news” literacy practices. Additionally, our team doing ongoing research at the Educational Video Center youth media program worked toward building a partnership model with our collaborators. Our members also learned and produced in audio and video forms, including their own projects and collective projects like our video in progress about LAMBOOZLED!.
We also launched a limited podcast series, (Re)Search for Solutions, in which we are focusing on the unexpected and creative ways that researchers are looking at solutions to the persistence of gun violence. Listen to the podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, SoundCloud, or Google Play.
That just captures some of the highlights. It doesn’t even include the work of affiliated faculty, the work put into making ugly sweaters, or the time spent supporting each other as scholars and people.
Next semester we are planning to make more podcast episodes, more videos, more collaborations and presentations, and more multimodal research and scholarship. And of course, PodFest, our annual showcase of multimodal scholarship at TC, will be held on April 24 in the Smith Learning Theater. We hope you’ll join us at our weekly meetings, every Wednesday 12-1 in HM46A, open to the university community.
